Air-Sealing and Air-Barriers: Fundamentals and Details to Achieve Code-Compliance and Durability
November 3, 2026
9:00am-1:30pm
This session focuses on achieving low RBES-compliant air changes per hour by designing, installing, and verifying a continuous air barrier across the full building enclosure. Participants will explore how primary air barrier materials, tapes, adhesives, applied membranes, and control-layer transitions work together to create airtight pressure boundaries within building assemblies. Emphasis will be placed on why these boundaries must be continuous, durable, and clearly detailed: even small gaps, misaligned transitions, or incompatible materials can compromise energy performance, occupant comfort, moisture control, indoor air quality, and code compliance. Through construction-stage verification methods and Vermont field examples, learners will connect air-sealing strategies to real-world building performance and resilient envelope design.
