Energy activities for kids at home
We’ve compiled some of our favorite energy-themed games and educational activities for when you're home with kids. Let us know in the comments which ones you try!

From National Energy Education Development (NEED) comes two energy-themed twists on games you’re probably already familiar with.
- Sit down for a game of Renewable Energy Bingo - you can print the PDF or use it as a template to make your own.
- Flex your artistic side with Energy Pictionary.
Try some of these written and hands-on activities – these activities may require adult supervision or assistance, depending on the age of your kids.
- Unscramble the energy words in NEED’s Energy Jumble (answers on the last page).
- Follow the steps provided by Education.com to make a solar oven, then bake some s’mores!
- In need of some quiet time? Coloring books can be relaxing and informative, especially these energy-themed coloring books from Burlington Electric Department, the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and Classroom Doodles.
- See if you can figure out how much electricity your home is using, and practice energy conservation to make it use less by understanding your electric meter! There are different methods depending if you have a Smart Meter or an Analog Meter: click the photo of the meter that looks most like yours to download the instructions.
Efficiency Vermont helps to support the Vermont Energy Education Program (VEEP). VEEP’s mission is to, “Build a deep understanding of energy through education, encouraging choices that result in sustainability in our communities, economy and environment.” VEEP has significantly expanded their at home learning tools for Kindergarten students through high school seniors. We encourage teachers and parents to use these resources, or share with others who may benefit from the toolkit! There are great resources there to keep kids’ minds working and energized.
