Replacing a household light bulb has become more complicated over the years. Energy saving technology like CFLs and LEDs mean you can get a light bulb as bright as a 60 Watt incandescent that uses less than 10 Watts of electricity. Many people are now switching from CFLs to LEDs, since LED bulbs can save even more energy.
With outdated incandescent bulbs there was a clear link between the light output of a bulb and the amount of power it used. A 100W bulb was brighter than a 40W bulb, but this isn’t always the case anymore. Nowadays, we look for lightbulbs in terms of the brightness or their light output, known as lumens.
What is a Lumen?
Brightness is measured in lumens. The higher the lumens, the brighter the bulb.
How are Costs Calculated?
Costs include energy costs and bulb-replacement costs over a period of ten years.
