Businesses can now double energy rebates—up to $25,000 through November

Up to $25,000 in extra incentives are available from Efficiency Vermont for businesses or nonprofits that complete custom projects—while funding lasts.

WINOOSKI, VT—Dairies and ice cream makers. Breweries and furniture builders. Hospitals and colleges. Some of Vermont’s most recognizable businesses have saved energy and cut costs through Efficiency Vermont's rebates for custom projects. Now, for a limited time, any Vermont business can double their rebate—up to $25,000—if they finish a custom project by the end of November.

“Doubling your rebate is really an inflation-buster for businesses,” said Peter Walke, Managing Director of Efficiency Vermont. “It can help operations of any size make policy-proof investments this year. And the energy savings from these projects will help keep costs lower for years to come.”

Custom projects are tailored to meet each business’s unique needs and goals. This ensures businesses install the most efficient equipment and make the most cost-effective facility improvements.

But businesses can only double their rebate for a custom project completed before the end of November.

“You’ve got to start planning right away if you want to get a custom project done in time,” Walke added. “If you want to double your rebate for your business, you’ve got to act now.”

Past projects that received Efficiency Vermont’s custom rebates include:

Energy-saving ice cream making at Ben & Jerry’s facilities in Waterbury and St. Albans. The ice cream makers are saving $816,000 annually thanks to “energy treasure hunts” that toured both facilities and found multiple ways to save energy, including refrigeration optimization projects.
Cutting-edge cold at Lawson’s Finest Liquids in Waitsfield. The brewery’s new 3,500-square-foot cooler uses carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, reducing its environmental impact and boosting efficiency. This saves the brewery $13,000 a year and avoids 223,000 pounds of annual emissions.
Bright ideas at Landmark College in Putney. The first Vermont campus to adopt 100% LED lights, Landmark also added controls for its HVAC systems in nearly all its buildings. Along with other projects, each year Landmark saves $98,000 and enough electricity to power 79 homes.
Energy-conscious yogurt at Commonwealth Dairy in Brattleboro. With a new, optimized building management system and upgrades to their chilled water and compressed air systems, Commonwealth Dairy is saving around $200,000 annually.
Hand-crafted savings at Pompanoosuc Mills in Thetford. Switching to 100% LED lighting, specifically tailored to be warm and inviting to showcase the company’s hand-crafted furniture, helped this Upper Valley icon cut its annual electricity bills by 15%, saving $30,000 a year.
Smart cooling at Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC) in Berlin. Fine-tuning CVMC’s HVAC systems, chilled water system, and data center cooling drove improvements that save $63,000 annually, reducing energy use and operating costs while also improving staff and patient safety.

Efficiency Vermont has other supports for businesses looking to invest in efficiency, including:

Free Business Energy Consultations for businesses of any size. Understand where energy and money are being wasted in your business, and learn about incentives and rebates that can help.
Rebates for pre-approved commercial tubular LED (TLED) lamp replacements. Rebates cover up to 100% of product costs for qualifying TLED lamps that replace existing fluorescent lamps.
Rebates for pre-approved agricultural LED lighting projects. Rebates cover up to 100% of a project’s total costs in livestock or sugaring facilities, farmyards, dairy barns, processing and sorting rooms, milking parlors, and egg-packing rooms.

Only new or currently incomplete custom projects are eligible for a doubled rebate up to $25,000. Eligible projects may receive up to twice the standard custom incentive with the total additional incentive capped at $25,000 or 100% of the total project cost, whichever is less. Custom projects must be completed in full by November 30, 2026. This offer is only available for a limited time, or until funds run out this year. Efficiency Vermont announces 2026 rebates to help Vermonters achieve their home energy goals in the new year

Weatherization, heating systems, and appliance rebates can help households save money—while funding lasts

WINOOSKI, VT—Vermonters can keep their New Year’s resolutions to save energy with 2026 rebates and financial support from Efficiency Vermont and partners across the state—including weatherization incentives while funding lasts.

“Improving your home’s energy efficiency in 2026 is an investment that will pay off for years to come,” said Peter Walke, Efficiency Vermont’s managing director. “It’ll pay off—literally—with lower energy bills. With improved comfort. With lower emissions thanks to more deliberate energy use. And by lowering demand, it supports a more affordable electricity system for everyone connected to our shared grid.”

Now is the perfect time to plan a home energy project. Find a contractor in the Efficiency Excellence Network near you to start your project or begin planning for spring.

Heat pump heating system rebates are available through a joint program offered by Efficiency Vermont and your electric utility. Efficiency Vermont’s website also has information on additional incentives that may be available from your utility.

Weatherization rebates offering up to 90% cash back are also available from Efficiency Vermont—with limited-time funding from the Vermont Department of Public Service supporting increased incentives for low- and moderate-income households. Free weatherization services for low-income households are also available through the state’s Weatherization Assistance Programs.

Incentives and solutions that can help Vermonters embrace energy savings in 2026 include:

Free resources to prioritize energy investments in the new year. Understand current offers or diagnose high bills by calling Efficiency Vermont’s Energy Advisors. You can also schedule a free Virtual Home Energy Visit with an Efficiency Vermont energy expert to get personalized advice and a list of next steps toward your goals.
Up to 90% cash back on weatherization projects. Air sealing and insulating your home lowers energy bills, makes a home more comfortable year-round, and improves indoor air quality. Weatherization also makes it easier to embrace clean technologies like heat pumps. Increased weatherization incentives are only available through the end of 2026—or while funding lasts.
Rebates for heating systems that work for your household. Save up to $475 on a ductless “mini split” heat pump, or save up to $2,200 on a ducted heat pump. Or opt for advanced wood heating with a wood or pellet stove (and a $400 rebate), or get $6,000 off central wood heating systems.
Save up to $1,000 on water heaters that use heat pump technology. Get a $600 discount when you upgrade to a heat pump water heater, bringing the efficiency and savings of a heat pump to the hot water needed in your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. Income-eligible households can get an additional $400 back.
Create a healthy home with appliance rebates. Control your home’s temperature and save on energy bills with up to $100 cash back on a smart thermostat. Or manage moisture in your home with up to $90 off a dehumidifier. You can also get up to $400 off a heat pump clothes dryer or washer/heat pump dryer combo unit. If you’re already planning for summer, get up to $150 off a window AC unit.
Businesses can save on energy investments, too. Businesses can get up to $25,000 in additional funding for custom projects or take advantage of increased incentives for pre-approved LED lighting projects. These incentives are only available for projects completed by November 2026.

Low-income households may qualify for additional support, including a voucher for up to $1,200 for replacing one eligible household appliance (like a refrigerator, freezer, or clothes washer). Additional offers include free weatherization through the state’s Weatherization Assistance Programs, and free efficient products like LED light bulbs and water-saving devices. Vermont lenders can also help you achieve your New Year’s energy goals with financing that removes up-front costs for home energy projects. ‘Button Up Vermont’ urges Vermonters to weatherize this fall using state rebates and expiring tax credits

Vermont rebates offer up to $9,500 for comprehensive weatherization. Expiring federal tax credits offer additional savings for projects completed by the end of the year

WINOOSKI, VT—As temperatures drop across the northeast, partners in the statewide Button Up Vermont campaign are urging homeowners and renters to prepare their homes for colder temperatures using Vermont weatherization and heat pump rebates—and use soon-to-expire federal tax credits for projects completed this year.

Weatherization rebates from Efficiency Vermont, Vermont Gas Systems (VGS), and other partners aren’t going anywhere. But federal home energy tax credits—for things like energy-efficient windows and doors, insulation and air sealing, and heating systems—all expire at the end of the year.

That’s why this year’s “Button Up Vermont” campaign—kicking off Oct. 1 with a month of webinars, events, and other promotions—will focus on helping Vermonters understand how to make their homes more comfortable using all the state and federal incentives available.

“Buttoning up a home can make it more comfortable while also lowering your heating bills,” said Peter Walke, Efficiency Vermont’s managing director. “Whether it’s starting with a simple ‘DIY’ project or investing in comprehensive weatherization by a skilled professional, Efficiency Vermont’s rebates can help get your home ready for winter—and make it more affordable for years to come.”

Both Efficiency Vermont rebates and VGS incentives offer customers up to $9,500 for comprehensive weatherization projects. Incentives vary based on household size and income. Income-eligible households may qualify for free weatherization through the state’s Weatherization Assistance Programs (WAPs).

“With Federal rebates set to expire at the end of the year, now is the time to leverage rebates and reduce the cost of these energy-saving home improvements,” said Neale Lunderville, President and CEO of VGS. “Our teams work directly with customers to assess how they can get the most bang for their buck and improve comfort. We’re ready to do our part to help Vermonters button up ahead of winter.”

“Everyone deserves a safe, comfortable, and affordable home. Free weatherization services from Vermont’s Weatherization Assistance Programs are one of the best ways we can help eligible households achieve those goals,” said Wendy McGillivray, Executive Director and Director of Weatherization for NETO. Serving the Northeast Kingdom, NETO is one of five WAPs across Vermont offering no-cost weatherization and related services to income-qualified households. “The ‘Button Up’ campaign is a great opportunity for people to learn more about the steps they can take to have a more comfortable home."

Telltale signs a home is losing heat and needs “buttoning up” include:

Drafts, even when the heat is on, could be a sign that cold air is leaking in and heat is leaking out, wasting energy.
Snow melting unevenly on a roof, indicating an attic in need of air sealing and insulation.
Icicles or ice dams forming on a rooftop, a sign that heat is escaping through the roof.
Mold. A lack of insulation or proper ventilation can cause moisture to rise and get trapped, creating unhealthy indoor air and potentially other issues for a home if left untreated.

Vermont Law and Graduate School partners with Efficiency Vermont to explain soon-to-expire home energy tax credits and other ways to save

WINOOSKI, VT—Federal tax credits promising significant savings for home energy investments will expire at the end of the year. That’s why Efficiency Vermont is partnering with Vermont Law and Graduate School to offer a free public webinar explaining what homeowners need to know about these tax breaks while they are available.

The webinar will also provide information on rebates from Efficiency Vermont—which are not expiring—that can be stacked with the tax credits for even more savings.

“These home energy tax credits are an important way for households to get extra help for investing in their home,” said Jenny L. Carter, a professor and senior attorney with Vermont Law and Graduate School’s Institute for Energy and the Environment. “We want to help Vermont homeowners understand what’s feasible in the months ahead before these tax breaks expire.”

The federal tax credits promise hundreds—in some cases thousands—of dollars for projects like home energy audits, weatherization upgrades, and new heating systems like heat pumps. But all projects must be completed by Dec. 31, 2025, to be eligible for the tax credit.

“Tax credits are just one way to reduce the cost of home energy improvements—and the good news is Efficiency Vermont’s rebates aren’t going anywhere,” said Peter Walke, Efficiency Vermont’s managing director. “This webinar will help Vermonters understand the tax credits, rebates, and utility incentives they can use to help lower their energy bills. ‘Energy leadership’ awards honor innovation, emissions savings at annual Best Practices Exchange

Efficiency Vermont’s BPX event marks its 14th year with more than 190 attendees and a keynote address from electric aviation pioneer BETA Technologies

KILLINGTON, VT—More than 190 people gathered at the Killington Grand Resort Hotel this week for the Best Practices Exchange (BPX), Efficiency Vermont’s annual gathering of the state’s largest commercial and industrial operators and businesses. The event also honored six “Energy Leadership” award winners in areas ranging from decarbonization to innovation to “partner of the year.”

Held from Wednesday, Sept. 17, through Thursday, Sept. 18, the event brought together business leaders from aerospace, healthcare, utilities, education, food and beverage manufacturing and distribution, and economic development. Attendees included executives, facilities managers, and mechanical contractors, all sharing expertise and knowledge on energy-saving strategies and innovations. The BPX audience also engaged two dozen sponsors and vendors of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, industrial systems, and related technologies.

“We at Efficiency Vermont hear you—it’s a challenging time to prioritize energy-saving projects,” said Peter Walke, Efficiency Vermont’s managing director, in his opening remarks. “Facing rising costs and unpredictable policies, we’re committed to helping businesses with projects that keep operating costs low and reduce energy use.” Walke stressed Efficiency Vermont’s support as an “energy co-champion” on such projects through technical expertise and financial incentives—like up to an additional $25,000 in extra incentives for businesses that complete custom projects by November 2026.

Investments made in 2024 by commercial and industrial customers with Efficiency Vermont’s support will, over their lifetime, save more than 521 million kWh—enough electricity to power more than 3,800 Vermont homes for 20 years. Those investments will also save the energy equivalent of more than four million gallons of propane and oil.

Alex Gagnon, the lead of Facilities and Construction with electric aircraft pioneer BETA Technologies, delivered this year’s BPX keynote. Born and raised in Brattleboro with a civil engineering degree from the University of Vermont, Gagnon helped bring BETA’s South Burlington production facility to life as a first-of-its-kind building to manufacture electric aircraft. Gagnon told the BPX attendees about building a low-emissions facility aligned with the company’s values around sustainability.

Six organizations were honored with “Energy Leadership” awards for industry-leading projects supporting energy efficiency.

The winners of the 2025 BPX Energy Leadership Awards are:

Changemaker Award: Elderly Services, Inc., facility in Middlebury. Updating a 20-year-old building to reflect values of energy efficiency and environmental stewardship, Elderly Services implemented extensive weatherization and installed a new ground-source heat pump system, reducing its HVAC energy use by 70%. Nearly 200 solar panels generate the facility’s electricity. Combined with participation in Green Mountain Power’s Flexible Load Management program, Elderly Services was able to cut its electric bill in half and reduce propane use by 90%.
Impact Award: UVM Medical Center’s Holly Court warehouse in Williston. UVM Medical Center’s 160,000-square-foot storage facility in Williston warehouses all supplies, materials, and equipment for hospital operations. Replacing old fluorescent lighting—which ran 24 hours a day—with LED lights and lighting controls, the warehouse reduced total building energy consumption by around 30% and is now saving $30,000 in energy costs annually. The project also improved worker safety through improved quality of light in the warehouse.
Innovation Award: Farrell Distributing’s warehouse and shipping center in Rutland. Farrell overhauled its warehouse facility, replacing an old split refrigeration system that cools 35,000 square feet of warehouse space. Working with Efficiency Vermont and Turner Piping and Refrigeration, Farrell invested in a new natural refrigeration system that avoids “conventional” synthetic refrigerants—which can potentially leak and release potent greenhouse gases—and installed a system that uses carbon dioxide as a natural refrigerant. The CO2 system cools the warehouse space, reducing the refrigerant carbon impact by 90,000 lbs (equivalent to over 4,500 gallons of gasoline consumed) and saves the facility more than $90,000 per year in energy costs.
Decarbonization Award: BETA Technologies’ manufacturing facility in South Burlington. BETA opened its 188,500-square-foot manufacturing facility in 2023, a remarkable 12 months after the first concrete was poured. The electric aircraft manufacturing facility was designed and built to be sustainable and energy efficient, reflecting the company’s mission to decarbonize aviation. The fully electrified facility uses over 250 geothermal wells as part of a closed-loop ground-source heat pump system that provides the energy needed to heat and cool the entire facility. Overall, the building uses 50% less energy than a typical building of the same size, avoiding more than 432 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.
"Energy Champion” Award: Si-Yol Yi, Safety, Health, and Environmental Front Line Manager for Ben & Jerry’s in Waterbury. Si-Yol Yi is leading the modernization of ice cream manufacturing through a comprehensive energy management approach. He developed a pipeline of energy projects to achieve Ben & Jerry’s net-zero energy goals, with projects like an industrial heat pump at the Waterbury facility. When completed, the facility will be able to operate without using its old and inefficient oil boilers, avoiding more than 1 million pounds of CO2e emissions. Si-Yol’s leadership around controls treasure hunts, industrial facility treasure hunts, Flexible Load Management, sub-metering, refrigeration optimization, equipment audits, and more resulted in more than $816,000 in cost savings annually.
“Partner of the Year” Award: Central Vermont Economic Development Corporation (CVEDC) in Montpelier. CVEDC has been an important strategic partner for Efficiency Vermont for many years, and this award recognizes its help for businesses recovering from the devastating summer floods in 2023 and 2024. Supporting retailers, restaurants, and other operations in the region, CVEDC’s outreach helped more than 60 businesses rebuild using more than $300,000 in incentives from Efficiency Vermont’s flood recovery rebates.

Commentary: Energy efficiency is our first, best tool for lower energy bills

Vermonters feel it every time we get an energy bill or fill up at the pump—costs are high and unpredictable. Global markets swing wildly, storms knock out power, and heating our homes in the winter takes a bigger bite out of our paychecks than it used to.

We can’t control global fuel prices. But we can control how much energy we use. That’s why energy efficiency is the single most powerful, affordable tool we have to keep costs down.

Efficiency Vermont is now planning our next three years of programs to help Vermonters save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a moment to reflect on the importance of efficiency in our state. And it’s an opportunity for Vermonters to take our survey and share your feedback on our programs and services.

When a business replaces outdated lighting or upgrades to efficient equipment, it lowers its bills and strengthens its bottom line. When a home is weatherized, insulated, and air-sealed, it uses less fuel to keep us warm in January and less electricity to keep us cool in July. These aren’t just small savings—they add up. Over the past two decades, Vermonters have saved more than $3.5 billion thanks to efficiency improvements.

Efficiency is also our cheapest energy resource. It costs far less to save a unit of energy than to produce one. Every kilowatt-hour of electricity we don’t need is one we don’t have to generate, transmit across expensive power lines, and pay for. This means lower costs for utilities, more manageable peaks when demand surges, and, over time, more affordable bills for ratepayers.

Efficiency Vermont doubles custom business incentives—up to $25,000 in extra cash

Businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations can get extra help navigating uncertain times

WINOOSKI, VT—As businesses in Vermont continue to face rising costs and economic uncertainties, Efficiency Vermont is stepping up with additional support. For a limited time, business can double their custom incentive for energy efficiency projects. That means up to an additional $25,000 bonus for businesses, nonprofits, farm operations, and institutions that complete projects by November 2026.

“We’re doubling our custom incentives now so businesses of all sizes can improve their operations while dealing with economic uncertainties, policy changes, rising prices, and other challenges,” said Peter Walke, managing director of Efficiency Vermont. “Doubling our custom incentives helps Vermont businesses achieve greater financial stability, reduces operating costs, and gives them more control over how they use energy."

Efficiency Vermont’s custom rebates are tailored to each business’s needs, ensuring the most efficient equipment and process improvements are implemented for each project. For a limited time, businesses, nonprofits, farm operations and other organizations can double their custom incentive, for up to $25,000 in additional cash for their project.

“It’s pretty easy to be a fan, because it worked,” said Gary Bourne, who used a custom incentive to upgrade cooler doors and lighting at his Notchbrook General Store in Stowe. "We use a lot of juice in these stores. But this incentive got so much covered, we said, ‘great, let’s do it.’ We saw savings the very next month. It was a good investment and a good experience with Efficiency Vermont,” Bourne added.

Businesses that double their custom incentive can also take advantage of:

Efficiency Vermont was established in 2000 to help reduce energy demand through efficiency programs. Each year, our programs and rebates invest millions to make the state more efficient when it comes to using electrical and thermal energy. We do this through:

Rebates and incentives: Whether it’s cash back on an efficient appliance, up to $9,500 towards weatherization, or a custom incentive for a business, our rebates help Vermonters afford energy upgrades.

Over the last 25 years, we have invested in energy efficiency for Vermont’s homes and businesses. Over the lifetime of those investments, Vermonters will save $3.54 billion, conserve 23 billion kWh of electricity, and reduce thermal energy use by 37 million MMBtus. That’s enough electricity to power 175,000 homes—and enough thermal energy to heat 22,000 homes—for 20 years. To continue these savings, we’re updating our plans and programs (as we do every three years) for the 2027-2029 planning period.

These new plans will continue to help Vermonters save energy and reduce costs. They will also help Vermont achieve other goals like reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reaching Vermonters in all 14 counties, and supporting low-income households. We collect these updated plans in a single document called a Demand Resource Plan (DRP). The Vermont Public Utility Commission (PUC) oversees Efficiency Vermont’s DRP and approves the programs to ensure we achieve our savings goals.

Our rebates, technical support, and other incentives are primarily funded by the Energy Efficiency Charge (EEC). The EEC appears on the monthly electric bills of all Vermonters—renters, homeowners, businesses, and other organizations. The EEC provides funding for Efficiency Vermont’s programs that help keep electric bills affordable while delivering programs and services that help all Vermonters save money, reduce energy use, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Cash back rebates to reach more Vermont households thanks to new income limits

More households now qualify for increased incentives on heat pumps, weatherization, and efficient appliances through expanded income criteria.

WINOOSKI, VT—More Vermont households than ever can now access Efficiency Vermont’s rebates and incentives for appliances, weatherization, and heating systems. That’s thanks to updated eligibility criteria offering additional cash back and bonus incentives for households based on their income.

“This annual update means more households can take advantage of thousands of dollars in extra incentives for new heating systems and efficient appliances. That’s more people able to access higher rebates to save money and meet their energy needs,” said Peter Walke, Efficiency Vermont’s Managing Director. “While many Efficiency Vermont offers are available regardless of income, it’s important to offer additional support to households that may need extra help.”

Efficiency Vermont has expanded multiple statewide offers for low- and moderate-income (LMI) households through an annual update to income criteria. These rebates give income-eligible households additional savings and support. The 2025 income qualifications vary by county, meaning a family of four in Chittenden County earning less than $155,750 qualifies as moderate-income, while a household of four in Washington County earning $134,100 or less would be eligible for moderate-income offers.

Expanded LMI rebates from Efficiency Vermont and partners include:

Up to $9,500 cash back for comprehensive weatherization. Low-income households can get 90% of their costs back, up to $9,500, on comprehensive Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® weatherization. Moderate-income households can get 75% of costs back, up to $9,500. Other income levels can get 75% cash back, up to $4,000. VPPSA member utility customers can get an additional $500 back on a Home Performance weatherization project.
$500 to $2,200 cash back for heat pumps. Heat pumps—whether ductless “mini-splits” or units that can work with existing ductwork—can both heat and cool a home to provide year-round comfort. LMI households across the state can also get Efficiency Vermont’s $200 income bonus for installing a heat pump. Income-eligible VPPSA member utility customers can get an additional $800 back on a new heat pump, while Green Mountain Power low-income customers can get an additional $2,000 rebate.
Get a $600 discount on a heat pump water heater. These highly efficient water heaters use heat pump technology to provide a home’s hot water. They can help save on monthly energy bills because they use just a fraction of the energy needed by fossil fuel water heaters or traditional electric resistance water heaters.
0% financing with a Home Energy Loan. Low- and moderate-income households can access 0% financing on up to $25,000 as a flexible way to pay for home energy projects. Low interest rates are available for longer loan terms up to 15 years.
Appliance vouchers, free weatherization, and other assistance for low-income households. The state’s Weatherization Assistance Programs offer free weatherization for low-income households. Efficiency Vermont also offers rebates on qualifying appliances. Low-income households can get a voucher to replace one appliance and access other free or reduced-cost products and services.

Income limits are updated each year by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Vermont’s income calculations consider county, income, and the number of people in a household. The tiers for Vermont’s 14 counties for 2025 are:

Renters can also take advantage of expanded income limits. Efficiency Vermont’s rebates for renters use updated rent limits rather than renter income. That means more renters in manufactured homes, multifamily units, and studio or multi-bedroom apartments are now eligible to access free products for renters and other offers and services. PSA: Commercial LED lighting rebates to end—act now for increased incentives

Last call for LED lighting rebates for agricultural operations or commercial and industrial facilities as incentives sunset

WINOOSKI, VT—It’ll soon be “lights out” on lighting rebates for Vermont businesses and nonprofits that have yet to switch to energy-saving LED lamps and bulbs. But farms, businesses, and nonprofits that act fast can still take advantage of increased incentives from Efficiency Vermont before rebates end.

For a limited time, Efficiency Vermont is offering increased incentives for pre-approved commercial lighting projects. These offers are designed to be flexible for a dynamic pricing landscape and changing costs. Projects must be planned and approved before final rebate amounts can be determined.

“Changing out old, energy-intensive lighting for low-power and long-lasting LEDs is one of the most cost-effective ways businesses can reduce their energy bills,” said Colin Santee, Efficiency Vermont’s commercial lighting program manager. “One small Vermont business that replaced 300 fluorescent lamps with LEDs saw a 50% reduction in their lighting energy costs, saving over $4,000 annually. Plus, updating to LEDs is a great time to add smart controls to optimize systems and reduce costs.”

Interested businesses should schedule an energy consultation with Efficiency Vermont’s account managers as soon as possible. They can also take advantage of limited-time custom lighting offers:

TLED Lighting: Replace linear fluorescent bulbs with tubular LEDs (TLEDs). Existing fluorescent light fixtures can be retrofit to use energy-saving and cost-effective TLED lamps.
- Incentive covers 100% of product costs for qualifying TLEDs.
- Minimum quantity of 250 lamps.
- This incentive does NOT cover labor costs, ballast replacement, wiring, sales tax, or disposal fees.
Agricultural lighting: Upgrade to LEDs in livestock or sugaring facilities. LEDs can boost productivity, safety, and comfort in operations like horse arenas, farmyards, sugar houses, dairy barns, processing/sorting rooms, milking parlors, and egg-packing rooms.
- Incentive covers 100% of project costs (including labor), up to $250 per qualifying fixture.
- Qualifying lighting fixtures must be 8,001 lumens or brighter.
- Horticultural lighting projects are NOT eligible for this offer (but these projects can use Efficiency Vermont’s rebate for LEDs for indoor growing).

All custom commercial lighting incentives require pre-approval from Efficiency Vermont and a signed Incentive Agreement. Eligible fixtures must comply with DLC v5.1 standards. Custom lighting incentives can be combined with additional rebates for agricultural equipment or other commercial incentives. Eligible nonprofits can combine custom lighting projects with Efficiency Vermont’s enhanced rebates for nonprofits.

LED lighting in commercial operations offers additional benefits beyond lower electricity bills, including:

Controllability: Commercial LED lighting offers increased control functionality, including auto-daylight and occupancy sensors, to maximize energy savings and user benefits.
Dimmable: Virtually all eligible TLED lamps that follow industry requirements are dimmable, meaning more versatility, increased energy savings, and improved satisfaction.
Color quality: LEDs following the latest industry requirements provide improved color performance, reduced glare, and better distribution—resulting in overall better, clearer lighting.
Longevity: According to the Department of Energy, LED lamps can operate for up to 50,000 hours, compared to linear fluorescent lamps that last around 30,000 hours.

Commercial lighting incentives are ending after more than 20 years of work from Efficiency Vermont and other partners to achieve market transformation in the lighting sector. Outreach to customers, partnerships with retailers and suppliers, and collaboration with regional partners all helped LED technology mature and markets evolve. The end of commercial lighting rebates comes after residential lighting rebates started winding down in 2023. By 2024, strong federal and state efficiency standards and laws meant rebates were no longer necessary to help customers make the most energy efficient choice. Today, over two decades of Efficiency Vermont’s lighting incentives have helped most Vermonters adopt LEDs, transforming the market and making LEDs a default option.

Vermont sees EV success with rapid registrations & a growing charger network

Nearly 18,000 electric vehicles are now registered in Vermont—with 50 dealerships using Efficiency Vermont’s EV dealer incentives to service and sell EVs

ST ALBANS, VT—Vermont now has nearly 18,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads, a 41% increase in the number of EVs on the road since last year, according to data from Drive Electric Vermont. The surge in EV adoption shows Green Mountain State residents are embracing the savings and simplicity of driving electric—and the environmental benefits of driving cleaner vehicles ahead of Earth Day.

Vermont recorded 17,939 registered EVs as of January 2025, according to Department of Motor Vehicles registration data tracked by Drive Electric Vermont and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.

More than 12% of all new cars registered in Vermont last year had a plug, according to the Vermont Vehicle and Automotive Distributors Association. Used EV registrations are also growing, with pre-owned EVs making up about 15% of newly registered EVs in the state. Other Vermont EV benchmarks include:

Nearly 18,000 EVs means Vermont has doubled its fleet of EVs in just the last two years.
Vermont now has 459 public EV chargers, including 92 Level 3 DC Fast Chargers.
60% of Vermont’s EVs are all-electric vehicles (AEVs) powered entirely by a battery, while 40% are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) that run on a battery or a gas-powered engine.
Top-selling EVs in the fourth quarter of 2024 included the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV (113 sold), the Nissan Ariya EV (94), the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV (93), the Telsa Model Y EV (70), and the Ford F-150 Lightning EV (62).
Vermont took six years to register its first 5,000 EVs—the last 5,000 were added in just the last year.
This EV success is among the reasons why Vermont was ranked first in the nation by the Natural Resources Defense Council for cutting greenhouse gas emissions from its transportation system.

“It’s only getting easier for Vermonters to drive electric,” said Michele Boomhower, Director of the Policy, Planning & Intermodal Development for the Vermont Department of Transportation. “Today there are more types of EVs than ever, including electric trucks and SUVs with all-wheel drive options that Vermonters rely on. And Vermont now has more than 450 public EV chargers, including 92 DC Fast Chargers that can quickly recharge most EVs in as little as 20 minutes.”

Nucar Automall is helping EV drivers stay charged up by installing more than a dozen EV chargers at its new St. Albans dealership. They’re one of more than 50 dealerships supported by Efficiency Vermont’s EV dealer incentive programs getting help to invest in the equipment, tools, and training needed to sell and service EVs. (A list of participating dealers is on Efficiency Vermont’s website.) Through the EV Readiness Incentive—administered through the Efficiency Excellence Network—they’ve received $25,000 in incentives for installing 15 charging stations at their St. Albans dealership. It’s helping new buyers and existing drivers keep their EVs and PHEVs charged up.

“Having these chargers on the lot makes it easier for customers to see just how simple charging an EV can be,” said Ryan Ortiz, General Manager at Nucar Automall of St. Albans. “We’re excited to add Nucar’s new chargers to Vermont’s growing network that makes it easy and convenient for drivers to charge.”

Easy charging at home or on the road isn’t the only way EVs are becoming more accessible. “More types of EVs on the market make it easier to find the right electric vehicle that fits your family, commute, and situation,” Ortiz added. “With more EVs coming off leases, now’s also a great time for buyers looking for less expensive pre-owned electric vehicles—making EVs more affordable, too.”

That’s why Efficiency Vermont is sharing 5 tips—and 5 rebates—that can help Vermonters save money and use less energy during their spring cleaning. Keeping energy in mind while preparing for warmer weather can also kickstart planning for home improvements in the months ahead, like Efficiency Vermont’s increased heat pump rebates as of April 1.

April is "Earth Month,” and Tuesday, April 22 is Earth Day. Just around the corner is the Vermont tradition of Green Up Day, on Saturday, May 3. Efficiency Vermont is among the many Green Up Day sponsors who supported more than 30,100 volunteers last year who together collected over 400 tons of trash and disposed of some 15,800 tires.

In the spirit of Earth Month and Green Up Day, and with spring cleaning on everyone’s agenda, Efficiency Vermont has 5 tips to help you tidy up—and 5 rebates to save this spring—which can improve your home’s comfort and reduce your energy bills.

Here are 5 spring cleaning tips for a more energy efficient home:

Work efficiency into your spring cleaning routine. Clean appliances and systems in your home to optimize their performance. Dust bathroom fan covers and behind your fridge. Remove grease and dust from your kitchen’s stove hood or exhaust fans. Clear lint and debris from your clothes dryer’s exhaust and filter. And sweep or vacuum near any vents, ducts, or registers. Keeping these systems clean means they’ll use less energy and save money on your power bills.

Your household income could qualify you for bonus rebates and additional partner offers. Thirteen firms honored for energy leadership at Efficiency Vermont's annual Better Building by Design (BBD) conference

SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT—More than 900 attendees gathered at the Better Building by Design (BBD) conference this week. Efficiency Vermont’s annual event brings together design professionals, leaders in building construction, and experts in climate workforce trades. Thirteen “Best of the Best” awards were given out to builders, architects, designers, and HVAC and plumbing installers for their commitment to energy excellence.

Hosted at the DoubleTree Hotel & Conference Center in South Burlington from April 2-3, the event was devoted to the theme of “2030 on the Horizon: Assessing Vermont's Vision Versus Reality.” Attendees gathered to discuss the latest in efficiency practices and technologies, build new relationships and professional connections, and share insights and experiences through nearly 50 sessions and workshops. In all, over four dozen vendors packed the sold-out exhibit hall with new products and systems that can help Vermont homes and businesses achieve their energy goals.

With volatility around prices, energy policies, and workforce availability, Efficiency Vermont Managing Director Peter Walke told the crowd he remains optimistic about Vermont’s path to 2030. “Politics and policies may change, but what doesn’t change is how we deliver for our customers,” Walke said. “Investments in efficiency offer stability and affordability when so much else is uncertain.”

This year’s BBD keynote addressed energy insecurity. Speaker Dr. Diana Hernández, an associate professor of sociomedical sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, shared solutions that emphasize people, health, comfort, and resilience. Noting multiple shortcomings in the U.S. energy safety net, Dr. Hernández said aging energy infrastructure and climate change further increase vulnerability. She urged policymakers, community organizations, utilities, and the climate workforce to work together to improve energy affordability. “If we get it right, eradicating energy insecurity will deliver social and environmental benefits around emissions, efficiency, affordability, and accessibility, while promoting health, wealth, and democracy,” she said. Dr. Hernández’s first book, Powerless: The People’s Struggle for Energy, is being published this month.

Efficiency Vermont celebrated 13 companies leading the way in efficient buildings and innovative and sustainable designs. This year’s “Best of the Best” awards include two Efficiency Excellence Network (EEN) member awards, seven residential project awards, and four commercial project awards. The winners are:

Efficiency Excellence Network - Partner of the Year: Sisler Builders Inc., Stowe. For more than 40 years, Steve Sisler and his crews and teams of subtractors have been building high-quality custom homes and remodels in north-central Vermont ski country. Sisler emphasizes investing in energy efficiency at the point of construction to meet or exceed Vermont’s Residential Building Energy Standards and achieve exceptional ratings for tight building performance that exceed the national standards around air changes per hour. An EEN member since 2015, Sisler Builders has a strong track record of partnering with Efficiency Vermont to promote weatherization and efficiency in new construction and existing homes alike.
Efficiency Excellence Network - Leadership Award: Tim Ryan, owner, J.W. & D.E. Ryan, Inc., Vergennes. A fourth-generation family-owned business operating from the same location since 1885, Tim Ryan joined the business in 1974. The company’s plumbing and HVAC business—part of the EEN since 2013—achieves excellence through continuing education and worker training. Their average installer has more than 14 years of experience. Long delivering heat pump HVAC solutions, J.W. & D.E. Ryan now offers solar and geothermal projects, leading the way for ground source heat pump work in Vermont. They take pride in marrying creativity with complicated projects to meet customers’ high expectations that maximize efficiency and comfort.
Residential New Construction – Single Family Market Rate Project – Site Built: Kinsey Construction LLC and David Koschak Design, LLC (location: South Craftsbury Road, Craftsbury). This modern energy efficient home achieves high efficiency thanks to double-stud construction, triple-glazed casement windows, and heating and cooling via heat pumps. A super-insulated poured concrete basement with additional insulation measures applied to below- and above-grade walls and in the ceiling and attic spaces. Multiple measures in the interior walls, air and weather-resistive barriers, and exterior sheathing help manage moisture and promote longevity. The home is a model for designers seeking to provide comfort, air quality and durability while meeting the housing needs of Vermonters with average budgets.
Residential New Construction – Single Family Market Rate Project – ADU/Tiny House: New Frameworks (location: Alfred Street, Burlington). A 580-square-foot prefabricated modular home that serves as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), this home was built with sustainability in mind. The all-electric home heats and cools without any fossil fuels. Prefabricated Straw-Structural Insulated Panels crafted from locally-sourced organic straw provide insulation while storing carbon. A concrete-free helical pile foundation minimally disturbs the ground and soil, avoiding emissions related to concrete while boosting flood resilience. And exterior and structural elements were sourced from Vermont forests and sawmills.
Residential New Construction – Single Family Affordable Housing – Site Built: Hildebrand Homes, LLC (location: 112 River Street, Rutland). Converting an 1865 two-unit dwelling into four all-electric low-income housing units required creativity and commitment. A new building envelope was created, allowing for new drainage, ventilation, and insulation measures while also creating exterior access to the units via a covered porch and ramp to accessible first-floor units. A steel roof and cladding cover wrapped and well-insulated walls. Heat pumps keep the building warm through hydronic distribution. The well-ventilated and airtight units are also solar-ready.
Residential New Construction – Single Family Affordable Housing – Manufactured Housing: Rural Edge (location: Shattuck Hill, Newport). RuralEdge used funds provided by Vermont’s Manufactured Home Replacement & Infill Initiative through the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board to purchase and install two homes at the Shattuck Hill Mobile Home Park. Each two-bedroom Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) meets Efficiency Vermont’s Advanced Manufactured Homes’ efficiency standards, including efficient all-electric heating systems that keep operating costs down. The homes will be rented to people over the age of 55 who are moving from homelessness, as selected through the Coordinated Entry program administered by Northeast Kingdom Community Action. Fecteau Homes procured the housing units, with partners including MEI (electrical work), Harris Plumbing and Heating, and Vermont Electric Cooperative.
Residential New Construction – Multifamily – Small Projects: Village Ventures (location: 501 Main, Fairlee). A mixed-use building made up of eight apartments and a retail space hosting a thriving coffee shop, this project reinvigorates a 1932 building built as Fairlee’s first post office. The building achieves high efficiency through extensive air sealing and insulation, triple-pane windows, and ultra-efficient heat pumps. Affordability and sustainability were key to the project, and the building owners report—after 18 months of operation—tenants are spending an average of $57 per month on electricity for lights, cooking, heating, and hot water.
Residential New Construction – Multifamily – Large Projects: Cathedral Square (location: Bayview Crossing, South Hero). A 30-unit affordable housing community for older adults and designed for aging in place, Bayview Crossing exceeds Efficiency Vermont’s high-performance thermal shell requirements. It also meets its heating and cooling needs with all-electric heat pumps, with a portion of that electricity met by rooftop solar panels. Other energy features include triple-pane windows, LED lighting, extensive insulation, and an energy recovery ventilation system.
Residential New Construction – Multifamily – Gut Rehab Large Project: Community Development Support, Inc. (location: DeWitt Block, Brattleboro). The full gut rehab of the long-vacant DeWitt Block built around 1900 includes a co-working office space on the first floor and a total of 15 housing units. The homes benefit from substantial renovations, including environmental remediation, new insulation and air sealing, new high-efficiency windows, and a rooftop solar panel system. The building meets Efficiency Vermont’s high-performance track and received ENERGY STAR and Zero Energy Ready Home certifications thanks in part to ENERGY STAR appliances, LED lighting, and all heating and cooling met via roof-mounted heat pumps.

Commercial Building Design & Construction - Innovative Combined Commercial New Construction & Rehabilitation: TruexCullins Architecture + Interior Design and ReArch Company (location: Winooski School District). Rehabilitating the 1957-era building was an inclusive process with input from Winooski’s diverse community. A main lobby “town center” includes a student health center, a basic needs store, and multilingual liaison support. A net-metered rooftop solar array meets about 97% of the school’s electricity needs, including powering a geothermal heating and cooling system and four 80-gallon heat pump water heaters. The building also underwent a deep energy retrofit of all structures, as well as extensive interior renovations—creating an engaging, inclusive, and equitable learning environment.

Commercial Building Design & Construction - Large Commercial New Construction: Wiemann Lamphere Architects and ReArch Company (location: OnLogic Corporate Headquarters, South Burlington). Designed to meet the needs of a growing workforce for its cutting-edge industrial computer products, the new OnLogic Corporate Headquarters is built to be flexible and adaptable to the company’s changing needs. A rooftop solar panel array substantially offsets the building’s electrical consumption. A 700 GPM geothermal heat pump system provides heating and cooling. The facility’s thermal envelope and insulation minimize fossil fuel-based foam products. Careful engineering of the building shell further minimizes energy use, exceeding Passive House commercial requirements.

Commercial Building Design & Construction – Mid-sized Commercial New Construction: SAS Architects (location: Williston Public Safety Building). A new 22,500-square-foot public safety facility for the Vermont State Police (and a separate 11,000-square-foot vehicle storage facility), this project was designed to exceed the 2020 Commercial Building Energy Standards. The main building is all-electric, with a well-insulated building envelope, above-code airtightness, and heating and cooling via ground source water-to-water heat pumps with a closed-loop geothermal bore field. Daylight-dimming and occupancy sensors control the LED light fixtures, with careful design of exterior zones, their activities, and security requirements that maximize lighting efficiency without sacrificing safety.
Commercial Building Design & Construction—Compact Commercial New Construction: gbArchitecture (location: Memory Care Home at the Gary Residence, Montpelier). A new one-story addition connected to an existing three-story residential care building, the Memory Care Home was elevated 30 inches above the first floor of the existing facility to meet city and state floodplain requirements, with accessible ramps connecting the two. An all-electric design heated and cooled with heat pumps, ENERGY STAR-certified commercial kitchen appliances, and an airtight and well-insulated building envelope help the project meet the owner's commitment to reducing energy use and fossil fuels.

Three Vermont nonprofits receive donations from Efficiency Vermont’s Valentine’s Day contest

Winners each nominated a nonprofit to get a $500 donation—while taking home a bonus basket of Vermont-made goodies

WINOOSKI, VT—Three Vermont nonprofits will each receive a $500 donation thanks to Vermonters who chose to spread the love this February during Efficiency Vermont’s second-annual Valentine’s Day contest.

The contest ran for several days before and after the Feb. 14 Valentine’s Day holiday. Visitors to Efficiency Vermont’s Instagram and Facebook pages, and Watts New newsletter subscribers, could enter by nominating a Vermont-based nonprofit of their choice to receive a $500 donation from Efficiency Vermont.

The contest celebrated nonprofits across the state and encouraged Vermonters to spread the word about the critical community resources they provide. The giveaway also raised awareness of Efficiency Vermont’s enhanced rebate for nonprofits, which offers up to $7,500 cash back to eligible nonprofits for qualifying equipment purchases or for completing energy-saving projects. The rebate helps nonprofits make upgrades and reduce operating costs so they can focus on the work they do best. The nonprofit rebate remains available through 2026, or while funds remain.

Three winners were randomly selected from eligible entries on Facebook, Instagram, and the Watts New newsletter. In all, the contest received more than 1,000 entries.

The nonprofits receiving a $500 donation through Efficiency Vermont’s contest are:

Homeward Bound - Addison County's Humane Society. Nominated by Beth Meese of Isle La Motte, Homeward Bound is a community-centered shelter dedicated to protecting the well-being of homeless, abandoned, and abused/neglected animals. Serving upwards of 3,000 animals a year, they offer animal adoption, education, advocacy, affordable spay/neuter services, and surrender prevention programming. Meese said she chose Homeward Bound because it’s where she adopted her cat, Mr. Nuts. “He was left at Homeward Bound when his previous family moved. He was there for two months before I brought him home. He's 12 years old now. We love him to pieces.”
Josh’s House VT / The Josh Pallotta Fund. Founded by a group of veterans, their families, and community members, the Josh Pallotta Fund honors the memory of Joshua R. Pallotta by supporting veterans and service members through programming at Josh’s House in Colchester. Liz Siegfried of Essex Junction nominated Josh’s House as a wellness and recreation center for Vermont service members offering resources, connection to emergency services, and support for veterans to help them sustain or return to full and healthy lives. Josh’s House is maintained by sponsors, grants, benefit events, and volunteers who donate meals, work at events, and support the organization. "I love Josh's House and volunteering because it's more than just a place to go, it's a community that cares,” Siegfried said. “Since I started volunteering, I have met so many amazing active-duty military members, veterans, and those who care for our military members. Each time I’m there, I can see the difference Josh's House makes in people's lives.”
Chill Foundation. Winooski’s Emily Styles nominated this Burlington-based global nonprofit for their snowboard, skateboard, surfing, and paddleboard programs for youth between the ages of 11 to 19. Started by the founders of Burton Snowboards, Jake and Donna Carpenter, Chill inspires young people through boardsports by working with schools, youth agencies, social programs, and partners to provide programs, cover costs, and remove barriers to participation in order to build a more equitable outdoor community. Chill has served more than 30,000 participants in 20 locations across 9 countries since its founding in 1995. “My favorite part of Chill," Styles said, “is its initiatives to help with increasing outdoor access to Chill Alumni—former youth participants—with gear, passes, career opportunities, and more.”

In addition to a donation to their nonprofit of choice, each winner also received a basketful of love in the form of Vermont-made items valued at $200. The basket included a winter hat from Skida Headwear and Accessories, goat milk soap from Elmore Mountain Farm, two pairs of Darn Tough Vermont wool socks, a wool koozie from Johnson Woolen Mills, and an Efficiency Vermont-branded coffee mug.

Contest winners can also taste the love with edible basket items like maple sugar candies from Mount Mansfield Maple Products, maple BBQ glazes from Halladay’s Harvest Barn, and chocolates and hot cocoa mix from Lake Champlain Chocolates.

Bundle home energy upgrades in 2025 and get more than $30,000 back—while funds last

Income-eligible households can combine rebates for weatherization, water heaters, heating systems & more—with a mix of Efficiency Vermont offers & limited-time rebates

WINOOSKI—Income-eligible Vermont households can embrace efficiency in 2025 and get more than $30,000 cash back through a combination of rebates and incentives for multiple home energy projects.

The savings come from bundling rebates for weatherization, heating systems, and other efficient appliances from Efficiency Vermont and your electric utility. These rebates can be combined with limited-time funding for weatherization and electrification initiatives from the Vermont Department of Public Service for programs expected to last into 2026.

Qualified contractors in Efficiency Vermont's Efficiency Excellence Network can help homeowners get started on projects that save more than $30,000 by combining some of the following offers:

Up to $24,500 back for weatherization (and for repairs needed to weatherize): Save on your energy bills with air sealing and insulation that will help your home use less energy to stay warm in winter or cool in summer. Income-eligible households can get up to $9,500 for comprehensive weatherization. Need to make repairs before you can weatherize? Get up to $15,000 through our Home Repair Program. (Home Repair is not available in areas served by Burlington Electric or Vermont Gas.)

Up to $5,000 cash back for buying and installing a heat pump water heater: Income-eligible households can get up to $5,000 back for water heaters that use heat pumps to make the hot water used in your bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room. Heat pump technology operates more efficiently than fossil fuel equipment and can save money on your monthly energy bills.

From $350 to $2,000 back for a heat pump: Transition from fossil fuels to heating with efficient all-electric heat pumps—which double as air conditioners. Get up to $450 for a ductless “mini split” heat pump that can heat and cool a whole floor or an entire home. Homes with ductwork can get up to $2,000 back on a ducted heat pump system.
Stay warm with wood heat rebates. Get $6,000 back for a central wood pellet furnace or boiler. Or consider adding heat to an area of your home with a wood or pellet stove and save $400.
Get hundreds of dollars off ENERGY STAR® appliances: Get up to $400 off a heat pump clothes dryer, $400 off a washer/heat pump dryer combo unit, $25 off a dehumidifier, or $100 off a “Most Efficient” window AC unit. ENERGY STAR® certified appliances can save money on your power bill by using less electricity. That can also benefit the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Get $100 back on a smart thermostat: Control your home’s heating and cooling with a thermostat that adjusts to your schedule and your home’s unique needs—and enjoy savings on your monthly energy bills.
Low-income households may qualify for an appliance voucher for up to $1,200 to replace one qualifying appliance. Additional support for low-income households is also available, including free weatherization through the state’s Weatherization Assistance Programs, and free and low-cost efficient products like LED light bulbs.

There’s no wrong way to bundle these efficiency upgrades. A whole-home approach could combine weatherization and Home Repair offers (up to $24,500), and switch to a ducted heat pump for home heating (up to $2,000). Combined with a heat pump water heater (up to $5,000), a new thermostat, and some appliance upgrades (about $600), that home could bundle more than $33,000 in savings. Another household may find a smaller bundle more suitable, like weatherizing (up to $9,500) but not needing any Home Repair fixes, adding a ductless heat pump for heating and cooling (up to $450), and installing a heat pump water heater (up to $5,000) for nearly $16,000 in savings.

Whatever projects you decide to bundle, completing several at once can be more affordable with 0% interest on up to $25,000 through a Home Energy Loan. No-interest loans are available to help pay for home energy upgrades over time, and low- and moderate-income customers can get 0% interest on loans of five years or less. Longer terms are available with low interest rates for every income level. Customers of participating utilities may be eligible for the Weatherization Repayment Assistance Program—to pay off their home energy project on their monthly utility bill.

$29,500 in rebates available to Vermont households hit by 2024 floods; businesses can get $16,000 cash back

Rebates for heating systems, weatherization, and appliances extended to households and businesses impacted by this year’s flooding

A suite of Efficiency Vermont flood recovery rebates are now available for households and businesses impacted by Vermont’s 2024 summer floods.

The Vermont Emergency Board and Governor Phil Scott authorized the Vermont Public Service Department (PSD) to extend the rebates first launched in response to the catastrophic 2023 summer flooding. Previously, only households and businesses affected by floods in July 2023 (and, for Addison County, August 2023) were able to access the rebates.

The change allows income-eligible homeowners and renters impacted by 2023 and 2024 flooding to access up to $29,500 per household in rebates to replace critical heating/water heating systems and appliances, upgrade or replace a home electric panel, and incorporate weatherization into rebuilding efforts. Flood-impacted businesses can also get up to $16,000 cash back on eligible heating systems and commercial kitchen equipment like freezers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and more.

“I’m grateful to Gov. Phil Scott, the Emergency Board, the PSD, and other state partners for making these offers available to those harmed by another year of damaging floods,” said Peter Walke, Efficiency Vermont’s Managing Director. “These rebates will help Vermonters rebuild homes that are healthy, safe, and more efficient. We’re eager to get these offers out to anyone impacted by these floods to help make their recovery more affordable.”

Support now available to low- and moderate-income households damaged by flooding includes:

Free Virtual Home Energy Visits to assess recovery options: A 90-minute video assessment of a home by an Efficiency Vermont energy expert, providing guidance on each home’s specific needs.

Up to $10,000 to replace home heating systems and appliances: Covering new or replacement heat pump heating system (ducted or ductless) or central wood or pellet boilers/furnaces and stoves, plus ENERGY STAR-certified replacement appliances like refrigerators, clothes washers/dryers, and more.

Up to 100% cash back for buying and installing a heat pump water heater: Low-income households can receive 100% of the equipment and installation costs of a new heat pump water heater, while moderate-income households can get 90% cash back. Projects over $5,000 require additional review.

Up to $9,500 to weatherize your home as you rebuild: Adding or replacing flood-damaged air sealing and insulation during rebuilding improves a home’s comfort, safety, and energy efficiency. Weatherization projects can also take advantage of up to $15,000 through Efficiency Vermont’s Home Repair program to address underlying issues in a home that need to be fixed before weatherization can happen. Low-income households can also get free weatherization through the state’s Weatherization Assistance Programs.

Up to $10,000 for home electric system updates: Electric panels can be replaced upgraded to 200 amps panel, restoring electricity or adding capacity for heat pumps, electric vehicle chargers, and more. The offer can also be used to move an electrical panel to a more flood-safe area.

0% interest on up to $30,000 for a Home Energy Loan: No-interest loans for terms of 5 years or less for all customers recovering from flood damage, including health and safety repairs. Longer terms are also available with low interest rates.

Rebates are available for eligible products purchased on or after July 10, 2023. Qualifying ENERGY STAR-certified fossil fuel boilers, furnaces, and water heaters are also supported by these rebates. Purchases must be on Efficiency Vermont’s Qualifying Products List.

Households that received flood incentives for damages incurred due to 2023 flooding, and were damaged again by 2024 floods, are eligible for these rebates. Those households can receive an incentive up to the amount that brings their 2023 and 2024 flood incentive total up to $10,000 per household for qualifying appliances, heating, and water heating systems.

Businesses impacted by flooding can access rebates including:

Up to $10,000 in rebates per unit for rental property owners: Based on rent levels, low- and moderate-income rental units are eligible for rebates for water heating, appliances, ductless heat pumps, and central heating systems damaged by flooding. Property owners can also get up to $4,500 for heat pump water heaters.
Up to $16,000 in equipment rebates: Flood-impacted businesses can now recoup 100% of their costs on eligible heating systems or commercial kitchen equipment, up to $4,000 per piece of equipment. Each business qualifies for up to four pieces of equipment, for a maximum award of $16,000
Support for ENERGY STAR-certified fossil fuel boilers and furnaces. These items qualify for 100% of the rebate, up to $4,000 each (provided they are on the qualifying products list). Larger fossil fuel boilers system projects must be individually evaluated by Efficiency Vermont to qualify for an equipment rebate.
Up to $9,000 back on weatherization projects: Air sealing and insulation products used to improve a building’s envelope or mechanical ventilation can get 100% of the product costs back, up to $4,000. Combined with Efficiency Vermont’s Building Performance program, businesses can get up to $9,000 back on eligible weatherization projects.

Rebates for businesses are in addition to existing point-of-purchase offers which can provide hundreds of dollars in additional rebates. Businesses are encouraged to contact Efficiency Vermont’s Customer Service team to find additional products their businesses need that may be eligible for these rebates.

Repair program is on top of weatherization rebate for 75% cash back—up to $9,500

WINOOSKI, VT—The best time to weatherize your home for a warm, comfortable, and more affordable winter is today. That’s the message from dozens of partners launching the annual “Button Up Vermont” campaign on October 1. Homes that have needed repairs to “Button Up” can now get up to an additional $15,000 through a new Home Repair Program that prepares homes to be weatherized.

Button Up Vermont encourages Vermonters to get their homes ready for winter with rebates and resources that make “buttoning up” any home more accessible and affordable. This year, the campaign launches alongside a new Home Repair offer to address underlying issues in a home that need to be fixed before weatherization can happen. Up to $15,000 for improvements is available to homeowners through the new Home Repair Program.

Available to low- or moderate-income homeowners planning to weatherize. All repair projects must be deemed necessary as part of a planned weatherization project in a home, including manufactured homes. Homes served by Burlington Electric or Vermont Gas Systems are not eligible for the Home Repair offer.
Many home repairs are eligible, like roof repair, ventilation and ductwork, asbestos/vermiculite remediation, window repair/replacement, foundation repair, plumbing, siding/sheathing, and more.
All contractors are eligible. Any contractor can install or complete Home Repair measures, including members of the Efficiency Excellence Network of independent contractors.

After repairs, the next step to “Button Up” a home is a weatherization project. Efficiency Vermont’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® rebate offers 75% of project costs back, up to $9,500. Vermont Gas Systems also offers weatherization rebates. Income-eligible households can also get free weatherization from the state’s Weatherization Assistance Programs.

Telltale signs a home has opportunities to button up include drafts even when the heat is on (a sign that cold air is leaking in and heat is leaking out), snow melting unevenly on a roof (indicating an attic in need of air sealing and insulation), and icicles or ice dams forming on a rooftop from escaping heat.

“Buttoning up is one of the best ways to make a home more comfortable year-round—and making essential home repairs is a great first step,” said Peter Walke, Efficiency Vermont’s managing director. “Once a home is ready, air sealing and insulating as part of a weatherization project means a warmer home that uses less energy—and lower energy bills for years to come.”

Efficiency Vermont’s 13th annual BPX business event welcomes 180 attendees and keynote speaker Sean Lawson of Lawson’s Finest Liquids

KILLINGTON, VT—More than 180 people gathered at the Killington Grand Resort Hotel this week for the 13th annual Best Practices Exchange (BPX), Efficiency Vermont’s yearly gathering of the largest commercial and industrial operators in the state. Leaders from aerospace, manufacturing, ski resorts, higher education, healthcare, and more were among the attendees who gathered to share expertise and knowledge on energy-saving projects. Six organizations or individuals were also honored with Energy Leadership Awards.

The event, held from Wednesday, Sept. 18 through Thursday, Sept. 19, gathered leaders of Vermont’s largest businesses and companies. Facilities managers, industrial producers, and mechanical contractors of these businesses shared the latest in efficiency practices, built relationships, and fostered professional connections. For the second year in a row, BPX also welcomed small and medium-sized businesses to the event.

Peter Walke, Efficiency Vermont’s Managing Director, welcomed attendees with a message emphasizing the value of efficiency, especially amid uncertainty and disruptions. “Vermont businesses face the lingering impacts of the pandemic, years of high inflation and interest rates, workforce and housing challenges, and a changing energy policy landscape. We’ve learned from past disruptions that investing in energy efficiency is always a good response. These projects support businesses with some of the best returns available. In uncertain times, efficiency isn’t just a safe bet—it’s a wise investment.”

BPX keynote speaker Sean Lawson, founding brewer and co-owner of Lawson’s Finest Liquids in Waitsfield, shared his brewery’s comprehensive approach to energy efficiency and sustainability in his address. The Waitsfield brewery recently completed a 3,500 sq. ft. cooler that uses carbon dioxide as a refrigerant. It’s one of only a handful of “natural refrigerant” systems in Vermont that reduces environmental impacts and boosts efficiency—saving the brewery $13,000 a year in energy costs and avoiding 223,000 pounds of annual emissions.

Six Vermont organizations were honored for their investments in energy efficiency over the past year. Winners of the Energy Leadership Awards include:

Innovation Award: Jay Peak Resort in Jay. Over the last 18 months, the resort brought a pioneering electric boiler project online to heat its hotel and indoor water park. The electric boilers harness local wind energy, helping Jay Peak match its demand for electricity with local supplies—while also curbing the use of propane gas boilers. The resort also installed three water-to-water heat pumps to recover heat that can be used to heat indoor water park features. The investments by Jay Peak Resort will reduce its propane gas use by 331,637 gallons a year, cut CO2 emissions by 2,380 tons annually, and save $183,250 per year.
Commitment Award: Magris Talc in Ludlow. Partnering with Efficiency Vermont, Magris Talc implemented a Strategic Energy Management program at its Ludlow facility last year to reduce operating costs and energy use. Through a “Kaizen” Energy Treasure Hunt, the company identified 75 energy-saving measures and used their energy management system to measure and report energy-saving efforts to staff. A combination of behavior changes, reduced waste, and less compressed air leakage helped Magris Talc reduce fossil fuel use as well as cut electrical consumption by nearly 5%—saving about $96,000 per year.
Impact Award: Against the Grain in Brattleboro. Partnering with Turner Piping and Refrigeration, this gluten-free bakery installed control systems to get more insight into its energy-heavy refrigeration. They were able to optimize defrost schedules and make other changes. The controls also allowed Against the Grain to enroll its freezers in Green Mountain Power’s Flexible Load Management pilot. They expect to be able to shed up to 20% of their power demand during peak grid events, saving up to $75,000 a year.
Changemaker Award: Ray’s Market in Irasburg. Owner Leo Piette wanted to keep prices low for his customers. He focused on refrigeration—a significant source of energy use for any grocery store—and installed high-efficiency condensers for his walk-in coolers and freezers. He upgraded to more efficient fan motors and added evaporator fan controls. He also switched to a more environmentally friendly refrigerant, boosting efficiency while using less energy. The upgrades mean Ray’s Market is saving more than $21,000 each year.
Partner of the Year Award: Ravi Parikh of CED Twin State Electric Supply. Ravi Parikh has been a lighting specialist for nearly 20 years. He’s provided custom lighting solutions for customers in manufacturing, healthcare, education, and agriculture. Now working with CED Twin State, he focuses on commercial lighting projects, integrated lighting control systems, and electric vehicle charging stations. He’s also worked with Efficiency Vermont to develop lighting programs and rebates. Ravi’s vast experience has helped save customers around 89,000 MWh over the last decade.
Energy Champion Award: Dean Ouillette of Middlebury College. Dean Ouellette, the Energy and Technology Manager at Middlebury College, transformed how the campus controls its buildings. Moving its HVAC controls to an automated model helps save energy by turning back (or turning off) when buildings aren’t actively in use. Installing power and steam submeters across campus increased insight into energy use. And implementing initiatives like controlling the campus’s chilled water and lab exhaust systems, LED lighting conversions, and more all combined to save Middlebury an estimated $279,000 per year.
