Exterior Doors

Doors are typically only a minor source of energy loss in a house, but some differences among doors are worth noting:

  • To reduce drafts, all doors should have airtight weather-stripping and a door sweep at the threshold.

  • Uninsulated solid wood or panel doors should be protected from the weather by storm doors. This not only will help save energy, but also will make the door less susceptible to condensation, staining, warping, splitting, swelling and rotting problems.

  • A foam-insulated steel or fiberglass door typically has five times the insulating value of a wood door.

  • Most doors can be adjusted to make them more airtight as well.
