Why Become Lighting Certified?

A Lighting Certified professional is someone who has demonstrated, through testing and continuing education, that they have the technical knowledge and experience required to provide a design or consultation that meets or exceeds the project requirements. According to NCQLP:

  • The LC credential demonstrates to clients/customers that you have acquired the necessary knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply lighting principles and techniques successfully.
  • The LC indicates your commitment to career development and professional practice.
  • The LC acknowledges your broad knowledge base in an increasingly specialized practice, making you a valuable asset to not only your company, but the industry as well.

Several organizations now require NCQLP Lighting Certification for consulting lighting professionals.  The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), for example, has the following requirement in the "Facilities Standards for Public Building Service" applicable to all federal buildings:

Lighting design shall be performed or supervised by a practitioner credentialed as Lighting Certified (LC) by the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP). Section 6.8 Interior Lighting, Day Lighting, and Control Systems.

In Vermont, the Efficiency Vermont RELIGHT Lighting Design program uses the LC designation as one of the participation qualifications. Applicants who pass the LC exam are eligible to participate in the RELIGHT program.
