Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs)

Types of CFLs

  • Spiral

Many people recognize CFLs by their signature twisty ice cream shape. Their shape makes them stand out, but where exactly can spiral CFLs be used? Spiral CFLs are very versatile and can fit a wide range of fixtures. You can start with the lamp next to your bed or in your living room or study. Spiral CFLs are great for the lights you use a lot, like wall sconces and ceiling fans. Spiral CFLs come in a range of models of different intensities, from soft mood lighting to bright kitchen lights.

  • Candelabra

You might not think a CFL is the right choice for a decorative light fixture but attractive candelabra CFLs are perfect for chandeliers, ceiling fans, wall sconces, covered outdoor lights, and other fixtures where you can see the bulb. Their slim shape also makes them just right for narrow fixtures where a bigger bulb won't fit.

  • Globe

Globe-shaped CFLs can replace incandescent bulbs in bathroom vanities and ceiling pendants. Like other encapsulated CFLs, globes take a few seconds to reach full brightness. Once they're all warmed up, they provide the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb, but they use much less energy.

  • Reflector

Recessed lights are among today's most popular lighting fixtures, and the vast majority of them are fitted with incandescent reflector lamps that can draw 65 to 100 watts of power per lamp. Energy-efficient reflector CFLs are perfect for places like recessed ceiling fixtures because they spread light out wider and more evenly while using just one-third the energy. Plus, because CFLs last longer than incandescents, you'll save yourself a lot of trips up the ladder. Reflector CFLs work well indoors in stylish fixtures like recessed can lights or track lighting, or even in outdoor fixtures.

Not all ENERGY STAR® qualified bulbs are appropriate for recessed fixtures. Make sure the ones you use are also labeled "Suitable for use in enclosed fixtures."

  • Post

Post CFLs are a good choice for outdoor fixtures like porch lamps and driveway lights because they're specially made to withstand outdoor conditions. Post CFLs even come in a yellow bug light model to keep insects away. Check the package for compatibility with timers and photocells.

  • A-style

A-style CFLs have the same look and feel of traditional incandescent bulbs, but are much more energy efficient. They can be used anywhere you'd use a regular old incandescent, even with clip-on lamp shades that don't work with spiral CFLs.

  • Three-way

CFLs can also work in dimmable or three-way lamps,  just be sure you choose a CFL specifically designed to handle the three different levels of electricity. Check the package when you go to the store to make sure your new dimmable CFL will work in a three-way lamp. A regular CFL can be used in a three-way lamp, but you will only get light in the middle of the three on positions.
