Commissioning Existing Buildings

More About Existing Building Commissioning

Below are some helpful things to know when considering whether commissioning makes sense for your building. For more details about working with a commissioning agent and the areas of your facility that they may investigate, view the “Sample Request for Qualifications and Proposals” created by Efficiency Vermont for your use under the Publications & Resources tab.

  • Typically, to use any form of existing building commissioning, an automated central control system is needed. This is due to the need for measuring and recording existing system operation which is then used for evaluation and development of recommended system changes.
  • There are different approaches to existing building commissioning:
    • Retuning or Conservation – This approach typically involves low-cost or no-cost changes to your existing system controls and equipment schedules without significant capital expenditure. Often these items can be implemented by facilities staff.
    • Re-Commissioning or RetroComissioning – This approach typically involves both the low-cost approach noted above and also includes evaluation and recommendations for equipment upgrades/replacement or system reconfiguration.
